CHALLENGE
Vegetation is one of the larger threats faced by buried pipelines. Trees, bushes and other plants start growing overtop of them with their roots easily ripping through the coating and threatening the integrity of the pipe wall. On the other hand, their stems and branches prevent any surface access to the pipeline for inspections, maintenance and care.
Government laws mandate pipeline operators to closely monitor and combat vegetation throughout their entire networks. A challenging task when the pipeline stretches across the most different terrains for thousands and thousands of kilometers.
SOLUTION
EMPIT offers a solution to this challenge by providing an innovative solution through an air-based inspection by an autonomous drone. It finds and follows the pipeline using the electromagnetic sensors, while keeping track of the vegetation height with the onboard LIDAR sensor. As a result, the customer is provided with a seamless high accuracy and precision vegetation height overview for planning purposes.
